Chicago Design

You’ll find IIT Institute of Design is a Chicago design hub located at the center of historic museums, universities, and renowned design studios.

Chicago museums are among the best in the world. You can walk to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Design Museum from ID. The Field Museum of Natural History, the Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium are close by. Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry—the oldest science museum of its kind—is one of the most visited museums in the world.

Local academic institutions include the University of Chicago, the Chicago Art Institute, and Northwestern University.

The city is celebrated for its public spaces and art, including nearby Millennium Park featuring Cloud Gate (‘The Bean’) and Crown Fountain.

ID connects to Chicago through projects and co-hosted events. The school partners with local corporate, non-profit, and government organizations to develop class projects. The students and local community also host events together, such as BarnRaise. The inaugural BarnRaise brought together designers and community organizers to develop concepts that address urban safety in an open source world.

Select ID faculty are leaders in local Chicago design firms, including gravitytank, Doblin, SapientNitro, IA Collaborative and IDEO. A network of ID professors and visiting scholars give students access to workshops and crits with creative pioneers.

Every year ID hosts multiple Chicago design events. In The Loop is a free and public-facing series of lectures on design, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Speakers present a range of topics emphasizing theoretical research, emerging methodologies that are relevant to the field of design, personal narratives, and examples from current design practice. Over the years, students have had the opportunity to hear speakers like Jon Kolko, Tamara Shepherd, and Kristen Taylor.

Many of ID’s visitors are prospective graduate students. If you’re considering applying to ID (or if you already have) we invite you to come for a visit. ID regularly hosts Open Houses throughout the year that include short presentations from students and faculty, campus tours, and information on how you can join our graduate program. Get a feel for the campus culture, see our facilities, meet current students and faculty, and explore the city of Chicago.
