ID begins search for new Dean

Illinois Institute of Technology invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Institute of Design (

Since its founding in 1937 as the New Bauhaus in Chicago, the Institute of Design (ID) has pioneered the development and integration of design and planning methodologies, human-centered design and strategic planning approaches in design and business. Today, ID is a graduate school of design committed to advanced education and research with internationally leading professional programs and academic research. The school has thirteen full time faculty members and more than thirty adjunct members teaching courses in communication, product, interaction, systems, user research and strategic design. The school offers a Master of Design (MDes), a dual degree in MDes and MBA, a Master of Design Methods (MDM) and a Doctor of Philosophy in Design (PhD). ID created the first PhD program in design that continues to be one of the largest Design PhD programs in the country. The faculty engage in theoretical, methodological and thematic research projects in fields such as healthcare, strategic design, socio-technical systems, urban systems, social innovation and sustainability. Through its academic programs, ID prepares graduate students to respond to current and emerging roles in design for today’s fast changing social, economic and technological environment. ID continues to build strong ties with industries, public agencies, nonprofit organizations and local communities through a wide range of unique programs such as conferences, executive programs, workshops, sponsored class projects and academic research.

ID is poised for growth at a pivotal moment in its 79-year history as we look for a new dean who can lead the school into the next phase of its evolution. In order to enable this mission, the dean must have a strong commitment and capability in fundraising, developing interdisciplinary research and teaching initiatives as well as further enhancing the strength of the current programs. We expect that the new dean will:

  • enhance visibility of the ID programs both nationally and internationally
  • enhance ID’s reputation through thought leadership
  • prioritize and lead fundraising to build ID’s strategic initiatives
  • bring synergy between professional education and academic research
  • explore the scale and scope of the program for ID’s growth strategy
  • engage with students, faculty, staff and alumni to help shape ID’s culture and students’ experience
  • guide ID to become the leading voice of design innovation in business and society.

The dean will be responsible for the operational and strategic decision-making of ID’s academic programs, administration, communication and fundraising. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to collaborate with others in order to enhance the strategic vision for the school. Candidates must have exceptional scholarly and/or professional experience and leadership commensurate with an appointment as a tenured full professor at the Institute of Design. The dean must have exceptional communication skills and enthusiasm for developing relationships with a wide range of constituencies both within and outside the school and for enhancing ID’s reputation, resources and initiatives. In response to IIT’s growing need for engaging design across the curriculum, the dean will be expected to build, initiate, and coordinate relationships with University leadership and other IIT departments.

The successful candidate will be committed to the university's goal of diversity and inclusiveness, and have a demonstrated history of working effectively with persons of all races, genders, ethnicities, nationalities, sexual orientations, ages, religions, and backgrounds.
