Dean Patrick Whitney on Radio One, India

This February Patrick Whitney, dean of IIT Institute of Design (ID), sat down to discuss design and innovation with Hrishikech Kannan of 94.3 Radio One India.

Patrick was in Mumbai to lead the IIT Institute of Design Strategy World Tour Mumai. As Whitney explains the Strategy World Tour took to India this year in part to explore the extreme scales of innovation in such a diverse culture.

Whitney has worked with India’s Godrej and Boyce on the development and execution of their new Innovation Center. There Whitney has lead students from ID in an Indian Immersion Program in which students team up with Godrej employees to tackle everyday problems using design methods developed at ID. In addition, Whitney has also assisted Godrej in the creation of “Horizon” and “Sprint”, two new cross-disciplinary teams focusing on increasing innovation by solving user problems first and figuring out business problems later.

While in Mumbai, Whitney and the Strategy World Tour toured Dharavi, a locality which houses one of the largest slums in the world. Even here there is evidence of Indian optimism for the economy and no lack of innovation. Residents transform their homes into busniesses and back into homes again all in one day showing the versatility and customization possible even with a deficit in resources. As Whitney explains it is this customization and and individualization that still exists in some of India’s pre-industrial economies and will set them apart as they use technology to leap frog existing countries outdated infrastructure of the developed world.
