Activism + Impact: Antionette Carroll

Antionette Carroll will discuss how new methods, interventions, and disruptions can help expand our understanding of equity and inclusion and ultimately increase the range of solutions that meaningfully impact diverse users. Noting that the most desirable solutions continue to work post-intervention, Antionette focuses on creating positive change that systemically brings us toward a more just and equitable society.

We need the expertise and knowledge of those closest to complex societal challenges in order to solve those challenges. In this panel discussion, we’re inviting a range of design professionals and industry partners to discuss how they reflectively engage with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their design and professional practices. Panelists will describe how they develop participatory processes and assess the impact of the solutions they create.

About Antionette Carroll

Antionette Carroll is the founder and CEO of Creative Reaction Lab, a nonprofit educating and deploying youth leadership to challenge racial inequities impacting Black and Latinx populations. Her new form of creative problem solving, Equity-Centered Community Design, was named a 2018 Fast Company World Changing Idea Finalist in General Excellence and Urban Design. A former Ferguson resident and graphic designer, Antionette became a social entrepreneur, design thinking facilitator, community organizer, and social impact design advocate after the death of Michael Brown, Jr. She served as the Founding Chair of AIGA’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force in 2014, and is currently Chair Emerita, working on long-term strategic initiatives such as the Design Census Program with Google and AIGA’s national Inclusivity in Design Summit. Antionette is the co-founder of the Design + Diversity Conference and Fellowship. An international speaker and facilitator, she has been a 2018 Echoing Green Global Fellow, TED Fellow, and Camelback Ventures Fellow.

Katherine Darnstadt
Founder and Principal Architect, Latent Design

Katherine Darnstadt is the founder of Latent Design, a progressive architecture and urbanism firm leveraging civic innovation and social impact to design more equitable spaces and systems. Since founding her practice in 2010, Katherine and her firm have prototyped new urban design systems to advance urban agriculture, support small business, created spaces for youth makers, advanced building innovation, and created public space frameworks. She and the firm have been recognized by the International Venice Architecture Biennale, Architizer A+ Awards, Chicago Ideas Week, NPR, American Institute of Architects Young Architects Honor Award and Crain’s Chicago 40 Under 40. Katherine teaches at Northwestern University and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Kristin Lueke
Strategic Director, Firebelly Design

Kristin is a proud Chicanx, published poet, and strategic director at Firebelly, a full-service branding studio focused on Good Design for Good Reason. As resident Storyteller-in-Chief, she leads clients and co-conspirators through the strategic process with empathy and intention. She helps progressive organizations of all sizes, across spaces and sectors, clear out the clutter to find their voice. Kristin has degrees in English and Creative Writing from Princeton and the University of Chicago.

Chris Rudd
Founder and Lead Activator, ChiByDesign
Chris Rudd is a human-centered designer, community organizer, and youth worker with a passion for social justice. He has worked with youth on the South and West Sides of Chicago, challenging them to engage with their communities through activism and technology. Rudd has helped youth from Chicago to the Bay Area design eight civic apps, including Expunge.io. Rudd completed a year-long Civic Innovation fellowship at Stanford’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (the d.school) and is currently working at IIT Institute of Design (ID) and leading ChiByDesign, a Black-owned and people of color-led human-centered design firm.

About the Latham Lecture Series

Richard Latham (1920–1991) was an influential figure in strategic design who studied design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in the early 1940s. Latham believed that the principles of design should be the core of business planning. Committed to this philosophy, he worked only with those who had a deep respect for users—and who understood that sustaining their organizations depended upon this respect. Today, Latham Fellows connect to Latham’s philosophy and are selected because of their ability to challenge the boundaries of design and transfer knowledge about design planning and its value. Fellows give a lecture hosted by ID and share their emerging ideas with the ID community and the wider public by publishing freely available digital content in the form of a paper, article, or other presentation that acknowledges their fellowship.

About ID Design Intersections 2019: Design + Networks + Activation

In addition to developing concepts and interventions, today’s designers and leaders must direct the implementation of those concepts and interventions. Achieving systems-level success requires cultivating and activating networks—technological, infrastructural, and social—that support new collaborative activities, process, and mindsets.

Starting in February with a pre-conference event series, Design Intersections 2019: Design + Networks + Activation invites diverse leaders, including designers, executives, strategists, policymakers, and entrepreneurs to explore emergent practices for activating networks and designing infrastructures that lead to large scale impact. The series will culminate in a two-day conference (May 22–23, 2019) featuring talks, breakout sessions, and workshops across three programmatic areas:

• Entrepreneurship + Emerging Technologies


• Adaptive Leadership for New Economies

Together, we'll discover real-world contexts where organizational behavior, entrepreneurship, policymaking, and design are already colliding. We’ll examine new tools and methodologies to evolve our individual and collective points of view about adaptive leadership and the transformative practices—and challenges—of large-scale collaboration. We’ll learn new approaches for a range of industries (food, energy, financial services, housing, healthcare, hospitality, mobility, waste, public services, technology) and disciplines (behavioral science, public policy, communications), and reveal how design can do more than think—it can do.
