Chris Finlay currently serves as the senior director of member experience at UnitedHealthcare Medicare and Retirement. He uses insights into consumer’s needs to design engaging product experiences in order to help UnitedHealth Group achieve its mission of helping people live healthier lives and make the system better for everyone.

Since joining UnitedHealth Group in 2013, Chris helped create the UHG Human Centered Design Studio, catalyze the use of human centered design, and has worked on transformational business strategies and innovations for both UnitedHealthcare and Optum.

Previously, Chris was the CEO of international shoe manufacturing business, otabo, worked for a variety of innovation consultancies including Doblin, Cheskin, and the Business Innovation Factory. Chris has owned, and run, his own small design consultancies in New York City, and worked across industries including fashion, energy, retail, education, and healthcare.

Chris’ first book, Getting to Thank You: A Practitioner’s Guide to Innovation, was published in 2014. He was chosen by BusinessWeek as one of 21 people who will change business. Chris is a regular speaker on human centered design and innovation, and teaches a graduate level course at the University of Minnesota on human centered design.

Chris holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts for graphic design from the School of Visual Arts, a Master of Design from IIT’s Institute of Design, and an MBA from IIT’s Stewart School of Business.

He enjoys cooking and sailing, and is currently raising a well rounded puppy named India with his wife Sabrina, at their home in Minneapolis.
