Master of Design Methods

Facilitations Methods Workshop

The creative alternative to an MBA

The Master of Design Methods (MDM) at IIT Institute of Design (ID) is a master's program for experienced professionals (5+ years), both designers and non-designers.

Often students consider the MDM as a creative alternative to an MBA.

Learn to make the ideal real

Food scientists and marketing managers, human resource professionals and venture capitalists—all can benefit from learning design competencies, especially strategic thinking, and all can bring them to realize personal and professional goals.

At ID, we integrate a number of disciplines and domains—anthropology, architecture and urban planning, behavioral science, computer science, engineering, ethnography, marketing and communication—into our studies. And that's why a vast array of professionals pursue graduate study in design and flourish, taking their careers to the next level.

At the intersection of design and business

ID faculty are both business practitioners and scholars, bringing their industry experience into the classroom. Class sizes are intentionally small to facilitate dynamic class discussion and frequent contact with faculty, creating an environment conducive to collaboration and networking.

Accelerate your career

Our popular part-time option allows you to take what you learn one evening in class to work the next day.

You also have the option to complete the program remotely from anywhere. Just log into class from your laptop for your designated class time.

Flexible curriculum

Our human-centered design sequence is the cornerstone, and only requirement of, our MDM program. For remaining courses, students are encouraged to customize their path at ID, mixing and matching according to their professional goals and interests.

To focus their studies, students choose from two of the following five concentrations (more information about each available below):

  • Service + Systems Innovation
  • Cross-functional Collaboration
  • Business Management and Leadership
  • Social Systems
  • Data + Design

  • 2 semesters in the sabbatical (full-time) format OR
  • 4–5 semesters in the professional (part-time) format (courses are typically taken in the evenings)
  • 30 credit hours

Tuition: $1,935/credit hour
Student fees, books and supplies: Approximately $600/semester
